Intial Ideas

Initial Thoughts
Today i had my first discussion with my tutor, Govinda DIckman, about my film. I had come across 5 distinct areas that Bruce Parry focused on with his series; Knowledge, issues, daily life, location and language.
We talked about how themes of strangeness and the "otherness" that other cultures give to us are possibly impossible for us to understand. With limited finances  to make the film, teh tribe my film was going to focus on is students. This is always a blaetently obvious choice but the most accesable. Ideally i would like to do it on a cult or quirky subculture of individuals but without the thousand of pounds worth of backing from the bbc this would be quite impossible. We focused on what the film would entail
·          the focus on the hedonism of students
·         the student riot footage could portary the threat to the student way of life
·         i thought about having the film done from the angle of teh tribe seeing the camera crew maybe???
·         the wilderness bruce goes through could be recreated by shots of wilderness about teh area.
So unitl next week with more pondering needed Govinda set me out to research the codes and conventins of the genre of ethnographic filming to make it easier to subvert tribe. He made me think about spying and voyeurism with regards to looking at the tribe.
I am also to research ethnographical film maker Jean Rouch about introducing a camera into a psace withput changing the conciousness of those being filmed.. One quick phonecall later and my brother said he would grudgeingly send his boxed set of tribe to me.
