Formulating My ideas.
Today i had my first discussion with my tutor, Govinda DIckman, about my film. I had come across 5 distinct areas that Bruce Parry focused on with his series; Knowledge, issues, daily life, location and language.
We talked about how themes of strangeness and the "otherness" that other cultures give to us are possibly impossible for us to understand. With limited finances to make the film, the tribe my film was going to focus on is students. This is always a blatantly obvious choice but the most accessible. Ideally i would like to do it on a cult or quirky subculture of individuals but without the thousands of pounds worth of backing from the bbc this would be quite impossible. We focused on what the film would entail
· the focus on the hedonism of students
· the student riot footage could portray the threat to the student way of life
· i thought about having the film done from the angle of the tribe seeing the camera crew maybe???
· the wilderness Bruce goes through could be recreated by shots of wilderness about the area.
So until next week, with more pondering needed Govinda set me out to research the codes and conventions of the genre of ethnographic filming to make it easier to subvert tribe. He made me think about spying and voyeurism with regards to looking at the tribe. .One quick phone call later and my brother said he would grudgingly send his boxed set of tribe to me.
